Due to the Cubs lack of offensive prowess, Uncle Lou Pinella has decided to
give utility infielder Ryan Theriot a shot at the everyday shortstop
position. Former starter Caesar Izturis
just hasn't been getting the job done at the plate as indicated by his .184
batting average. Fantasy baseballers and
Cub fans alike have been intrigued by Ryan "The Riot" Theriot (pronounced
Terry-o) due to his ability to swipe bags and get on base. In limited action last year Theriot hit .328
and stole 13 bases in just 134 at bats. Despite his impressive performance last
year, Ryan was not a part of the Cubs off-season plans. During the Cubs spending spree, GM Jim Hendry
went out and signed veteran utility man Mark Derosa to a lucrative 3-year deal
and was given the starting second base job.
Lou Pinella quickly realized that Theriot bat was needed in the lineup
and shortstop was best place for him as Theriot was a SS in college and
throughout most of his minor league career.
Now that Theriot is likely to get regular at bats he instantly becomes a "Sexy
Pick" and a spark plug in the Cubs lineup.
Theriot remains a free agent in most fantasy leagues and warrants major fantasy
consideration in larger leagues, and in particular ROTO leagues, due to his 30+
stolen base potential. Although Theriot
has looked impressive so far this year hitting .339 and already swiping 5
bases, fantasy owners must remember to curb their enthusiasm as the league has
yet to make an adjustment on Mr. Theriot.
That said, you can expect Ryan to go through some tough stretches as he
learns to adjust to the league adjusting to him (that was a keyboard full!). The GNUru advises all owners with weak
shortstops or extra roster space to pick up Theriot immediately. His arrow is certainly pointing in the right
direction and his multi-position eligibility can come in handy when the
inevitable injuries strike you infield and outfield.
